Position: Manager – Conference/Meetings/Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute
Job Description and Responsibilities

The Manager – Conference/Meetings/Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute has overall oversight of all training and event programs. This includes planning and implementing various events for the Sheriffs’ Offices of North Carolina including the Annual Business Conference, Spring Meeting, Fall Meeting, Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute (SLI), and special project-related training classes or events.

The position will work closely with the Association’s General Counsel to develop, plan and implement a professional comprehensive curriculum for the Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute. The position reports to the Director – Operations & Support Services.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute
    • Provide leadership, professional expertise, and direction in the research, development, implementation and execution of a comprehensive curriculum for sheriffs.
    • Develop and maintain highly professional standards and procedures for implementing training programs in keeping with the image and reputation of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association.
    • Conduct training needs assessments for SLI by speaking with experienced and recently elected sheriffs.
    • Research standards, practices, and trends for leadership development in law enforcement.
    • Researches and develops training class curriculum and materials.
    • Select appropriate training methods to achieve training objectives.
    • Identify, review and recommend potential training venues and subject matter experts to serve as instructors for the Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute.
    • Coordinate the delivery of training at the Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute.
    • Evaluate the overall effectiveness and learning that occurs at the Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute.
    • Modify training courses based on the feedback from attendees.
    • Prepare pre and post-event reports and analysis.
    • Primary contact for training material production, including coordination with Business Development regarding Corporate Partners and Sponsors for Spring, ABC and Fall Meeting.
    • Evaluate the overall effectiveness and learning at the Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute.
    • Prepare written reports for NCSA management and team members for SLI including analysis and recommendations.
  • Conference & Meetings
    • Oversee and manage the conferences, meetings and training programs for the Association.
    • Identify, review and recommend potential facilities for each event.
    • Plan the scope of the event, including time, location and cost.
    • Prepare pre and post-event reports and analysis.
    • Manage the budget and schedules of all Association events.
    • Manage the audio-visual specifics for each meeting.
    • Inspect venue to ensure they meet the Association’s requirements.
    • Manage, organize and assign staff to assist at conferences, training or meetings.
    • Monitor onsite activities to ensure event attendees are satisfied.
    • Evaluate the overall effectiveness and learning that occurs at conference and training events.
    • Prepare pre and post-event reports and analysis and assesses opportunities and makes recommendations for improving service to the sheriffs and implements those improvements as appropriate.
    • Travel to and work onsite at Association meetings, oversees logistics required for success.

Education Requirement: 4-year college degree or equivalent experience

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of five years experience required coordinating, leading and managing conferences, meetings and training events
  • Minimum of five years management experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to develop and coach employees
  • Project Management experience is preferred
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Project, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment demonstrating teamwork, innovation and excellence
  • Flexible with proven ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Demonstrate decisiveness in resolving business problems, making decisions and identifying priorities
  • Ability to adhere to our Association’s professional standards and core values
  • Ability to perform other related duties as assigned

Supplemental Information:

The work is typically preformed in an office while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, weighing up to 20 pounds.
