Job Description and Responsibilities
The Manager – Events has overall oversight of event program operations, which includes planning and implementing various meetings for the Sheriffs’ Offices of North Carolina including the Annual Business Conference, Spring Meeting, Fall Meeting, Leadership Institutes, and special project-related training classes or events.
In addition, to the day-to-day components of program management, the Manager is responsible for leading the development, and implementation of a variety of programs to help the Association achieve desired business results.
Manager – Events will manage multiple concurrent projects and will work with several internal and external resources.
The position will work closely with the Association’s General Counsel to develop, plan and implement a professional comprehensive curriculum for the Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute, Chief Deputies Leadership Institute and Jail Administrators’ Institute of Leadership. This position reports to the Director – Administration.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
Leadership Institutes
- Provides leadership, professional expertise, and direction in the research, development, implementation and execution of a comprehensive curriculum for sheriffs, chief deputies and jail administrators
- Develops and maintains highly professional standards and procedures for implementing training programs in keeping with the image and reputation of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association
- Conducts training needs assessments for Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute, Chief Deputies Leadership Institute and Jail Administrators’ Institute of Leadership by speaking with experienced and recently elected sheriffs
- Researches standards, practices, and trends for leadership development in law enforcement
- Selects appropriate training methods to achieve training objectives
- Identifies, reviews and recommends potential training venues and subject matter experts to serve as instructors for the Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute, Chief Deputies Leadership Institute and Jail Administrators’ Institute of Leadership
- Coordinates the delivery of training at all Leadership Institutes
- Evaluates the overall effectiveness and learning that occurs at all Leadership Institutes
- Modifies training courses based on the feedback from attendees
- Prepares pre- and post-event reports and analysis
- Manages and coordinates all facets of assigned programs to ensure objectives are met
- Assesses opportunities and makes recommendations for improvements and implements those improvements as appropriate
- Evaluates the overall effectiveness and learning at all Leadership Institutes
- Prepares written reports for NCSA management and team members for all Leadership Institutes including analysis and recommendations
- Assists co-workers as necessary and performs additional duties as assigned
Conference & Meetings
- Primary contact for training material production, including coordination with Business Development regarding Corporate Partners and Sponsors for Spring, ABC and Fall Meeting
- Oversee and manages the conferences, meetings and training programs for the Association
- Plans the scope of the event, including time, locations and cost
- Manages the budget and schedules of all Association meetings
- Manages the audio-visual specifics for each meeting
- Identifies, reviews and recommends potential facilities for each event
- Inspects venues to ensure they meet the Association’s requirements
- Manages, organizes and assigns staff to assist at conferences, training or meetings
- Monitors onsite activities to ensure event attendees are satisfied
- Evaluates the overall effectiveness and learning that occurs at conferences and meetings
- Modifies meetings based on the feedback from attendees
- Prepares pre- and post-event reports and analysis, and assesses opportunities and makes recommendations for improving service to the sheriffs, and implements those improvements as appropriate
- Travels to and works onsite at Association meetings, oversees logistics required for success
- Implements approved processes and procedures for training and events
- Manages, organizes and assigns staff to assist at conferences, training or meetings
- Acts as a liaison between the Association and contracted trainers for all Association conferences and training events and develops and maintains an effective working relationship with existing and prospective trainers
- Coordinates with the host sheriff and staff on the needs of both the Association and the host sheriff for the Annual Business Conference, Spring and Fall Meetings
- Serves as a point of contact for questions regarding logistics and training for Association conferences and training events
Project Management:
- Manages project schedules and ensure adherence to established timelines
- Aligns, tracks, and ensures proper execution of these projects as it relates to resource planning, business process changes, communication, training and operational readiness
- Establishes practices, templates and tools to improve quality, cost and efficiencies of programs
- Manages and maintains the master project plan for assigned programs
- Prepares, coordinates and schedule pre and post project meetings for all events
- Analyzes data from conference evaluations and surveys and develops action plan to improve event quality and customer satisfaction
- Track event performance areas and identify items to work on for future events
Qualifications:
Education Requirement: 4-year college degree or equivalent experience
Required Skills:
- Minimum of five years’ experience required coordinating, leading and managing conferences, meetings and training events
- Minimum of five years leadership experience
- Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to develop and coach employees
- Experience leading, motivating and managing various project and program sizes including internal and external resources
- Project Management experience is preferred
- Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Project, Excel and PowerPoint
- Proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment demonstrating teamwork, innovation and excellence
- Flexible with proven ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- Demonstrate decisiveness in resolving business problems, making decisions and identifying priorities

The work is typically performed in an office while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, weighing up to 20 pounds.
